‘And the cares of this world…choke the word…’ (Mark 4:19).
In the parable of the sower Jesus said, “And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word; and the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful” (Mark 4:18-19). Note that the issue is not with the seed or sower, but the soil. The Master was speaking about the churchgoers with a pre-existing mindset that chokes every Bible verse and sermon they hear, read, or attempt to apply. Jesus describes these thorns as: ‘the cares or worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things’ (Mark 4:19).
Can you cast your mind back to the time when you thought that the investments you now have, your marriage, the house you now live in, the holidays, the plum job, the expanded business, would make all your worries go away? How is it today? Ironically, the more you have, the more you have to lose, to protect, to sustain, and to worry about – that indeed is the deceitfulness of riches.
Brethren, if your worth and security is tied to anything other than your personal relationship with God, be certain that worry will choke the life out of you especially in a world like ours that is full of vanities. True joy lies in trusting God for what you need and thanking Him for all that He has provided for you now.
Do you have some “thorns” to pull out of your life?
